When I woke up, the knife was still there
What I find the most interesting about this short story, is the vagueness of it.It allows the reader to discover and create the story. It's insinuated that the knife was used as some kind of weapon but it's been left uncertain whether this is a physical or metaphorical use of the knife. It could be a metaphor for being stabbed in the back or it could be the literal sense of being stabbed. The shortness of the story challenges the reader because it's not the traditional structure of a short story and leaves them with more questions than answers. The way 'the knife' was written sounds as if it's a specific knife rather than any knife, this makes it key to the story. The use of the word 'still' creates the sense that the narrator is surprised that it's still there, as if it should have been removed, which suggests it shouldn't be there so therefore makes it suspicious. They use 'I', which makes the story sound personal to the narrator, which makes it more personal to the reader.

Interesting comments. Do you think that a good narrative is one which allows the reader to be active in its creation?
